Midnight Robber

Final Year 1st Project

For my first final year project, I chose Midnight Robber by Nalo Hopkinson, a Caribbean sci-fi novel which I have envisioned as a film for this project. I took inspiration form Trinidadian carnival characters and similar themes such as Black Panther and Fith Element.

The book is set in the future, a Caribbean colony took a rocket ship to create its own society across multiple planets, no specific date is given but based on clues in the books, they left after the slave trade but before the year 2000 due to the kinds of technology the people have and the clothing they wear.

The costumes are heavily inspired by Afrofuturist sci-fi and Afro-Caribbean fashion, taking elements of Afro-Caribbean clothing and elevating or altering them to suit a colony who have travelled to outer space and then use what is known to further develop the costumes for the different worlds.
